What can Nepali Christians do during the Corona lock-down?

The Coronavirus has compelled Nepal to enforce a nationwide lockdown, affecting both Hindu and Nepali Christian communities. The latter, accustomed to engaging in communal religious activities, now faces a crisis that challenges their foundational identity—weekly gatherings for worship on Saturdays. These gatherings, held at a specific place and time, define their sense of self. The halting of this essential communal activity, along with the suspension of home-fellowship gatherings, has left Nepali Christians grappling with an identity crisis.

Previously known for their distinctive roles as believers of Jesus Christ, churchgoers, hymn singers, and prayer warriors, the lockdown has forced them into a situation akin to their Hindu neighbors—both confined to their homes. Unlike their neighbors, however, Nepali Christians lack the familiar comfort of domestic gods. While church leaders find solace in personal reflections, online sermons, and Bible study, ordinary members are the ones facing the brunt of this crisis.

Amidst this unprecedented situation, Nepali Christians can take proactive steps to strengthen their faith and community bonds:

  1. Practice Their Priesthood in Christ: In the absence of regular pastor-led prayer sessions and teachings, Nepali believers have a golden opportunity to recognize their status as a royal priesthood. Encouraging personal prayer, Bible study, and meditation can empower Christians to independently connect with God. This self-discovery can lead to a stronger faith foundation, making believers resilient even after the lockdown.

  2. Begin Their Own Ministry in Their Neighborhood: While Nepali Christians have engaged in various social works supported by foreign sponsors, this lockdown presents a chance for them to initiate localized ministries. Focusing on the immediate needs of their suffering neighbors is an expression of God's love in action. Pastors can play a pivotal role by mobilizing church members to actively share resources and meet the tangible needs of those around them. In doing so, they embody the gospel through practical acts of kindness.

The COVID-19 pandemic may not be part of God's plan, but it provides an opportunity for Christians to partner with God in demonstrating love and care for their neighbors. By taking action and meeting the needs of others during this crisis, Nepali Christians can exemplify their genuine belief in God and convey His love without uttering a word.
